I guess you are all familiar with baboons, gorillas, chimpanzees, uranggutans and gibbons. They are all classifications of monkey. The many species of monkey have varied relationships with humans. Some are kept as pets, others used as model organisms in laboratories or in space missions. They may be killed in monkey drives when they threatened agriculture, or serve as service animals for the disabled. You heard it right. Monkeys can be your personal house keeper! (if you are a disabled person)
There are some organizations that have been training specific types of monkey like Capuchin monkeys as “Monkey Helpers” to quadriplegics or other people with severe spinal cord injury. Monkeys, during their early stage are socialized inhuman homes and as they grow, extensive trainings are done before they are placed with a quadriplegic.
The tasks that a Monkey Helper does:
– Microwave foods
– Wash the quadriplegic’s face
– Closing and opening doors
– Pass on things to others
– Open drink bottles
These are just some of the activities that you can count on a monkey helper. It takes time and great effort in achieving such a state. But some people really are interested and determined to prove that monkeys aren’t just noisy and babbling animals. Well, I guess they’ve succeeded.
